CAMPAGUS
The campagus began as footwear worn by Roman officers of high rank, the higher up the leg it was worn, the higher the rank of the wearer. Campagus became shoes or half boots which laced at the instep and were worn in the Byzantime period and were worn until the Carolinigan period. Probably the shoe originated from the gallicae. For a time they were worn by the emporers and were usually dyed purple, embroidered with gold, and embellished with pearls or precious gems. Some were embroidered with the eagle in the front and studded with gold, diamonds or other expensive jewels. Chief dignitaries including senetors also wore campagnus. They were front laced with toes exposed. Hunting campagus were generally of black leather.
